This exhibition is the result of a collaborative effort by students and faculty who are deeply committed to justice, human rights, and the preservation of academic freedom. It benefited from the generous financial and administrative support of various academic and interdisciplinary institutions at Carleton University. Their contributions have helped ensure the accuracy, depth, and reach of this important work. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to making this exhibit possible.
Independent Jewish Voices Carleton (IJV)
We are a group of Jews at Carleton University from diverse backgrounds, occupations, and affiliations who share a strong commitment to social justice and universal human rights. We are guided by the notion of Tzedek ve Shalom (Justice and Peace). We come together in the belief that the broad spectrum of opinion among the Jewish population of this university (and of Turtle Island as a whole) is not reflected by those institutions that claim to represent Jewish communities as a whole. We further believe that individuals and groups within all communities should feel free to express their views on any issue of public concern without incurring accusations of disloyalty.
We hereby reclaim the tradition of Jewish support for universal freedoms, human rights and social justice. The lessons we have learned from our own history compel us to speak out.
These principles are violated when we allow an occupying power to trample the human rights of an occupied people. Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza, living under Israeli occupation and military blockade, face appalling living conditions, with desperately little hope for the future. At the same time, Palestinian Israelis are subjected to a range of discriminatory laws and regulations and are consequently unable to enjoy the same rights and freedoms that are enjoyed by Israeli Jews. Israel is as an apartheid state.
The exhibition was designed by Nir Hagigi, President of Independent Jewish Voices at Carleton University (2024/2025)
Carleton for Palestine Coalition (C4P)
Carleton for Palestine is a coalition consisting of over 40 student organizations, faculty associations, and labour unions who have come together for three demands:
Full Disclosure of Investments: Immediate publication of all the university's financial investments, encompassing both endowed and non-endowed funds. Going forward, the university must update and publish a list of all current investments, no later than February 1st of each year.
Immediate Divestment: The complete divestment from corporations and entities that are complicit in human rights violations, particularly those profiting from the exploitation, surveillance, and murder of the Palestinian people.
Academic Separation: An institutional separation from universities and entities that support, participate in, or benefit from the Israeli occupation, oppression, discrimination, and genocide of Palestinians. The university should foster relationships with Palestinian educational institutions through inter-institutional cooperation, including student exchanges, infrastructure support, and library sharing. Moreover, the university must commit to establishing scholarships, fellowships, and placements for Palestinian students through programs such as Scholars at Risk.
Carleton Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP)
Carleton University’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is a student club and collective at Carleton University focused on raising awareness about the struggle of the Palestinian people under occupation, settler-colonial violence, and educating the masses on how to support and work towards Palestinian liberation. While activism is done both on and off campus, the focal point of SJP’s activism is addressing campus issues relating to Carleton’s complicity in the ongoing occupation, apartheid, and violence committed against Palestinians and anti-Palestinian racism. SJP works using a decolonial framework. While SJP maintains an effort to centre Palestinian voices, the club is open to individuals of all ethnicities and religious backgrounds who aim to uplift Palestinian voices. SJP hosts various events and actions to raise awareness, educate, and mobilize community members.
Carleton University Human Rights Society (CUHRS)
CUHRS is dedicated to raising awareness of human rights violations and fighting global injustice. We are completely student driven and take up the issues that concern our members, around the globe. Our main goals are to raise awareness and funds, to become active in the human rights field and to invest time and support towards Human Rights and Social Justice students during their time at Carleton, sharing useful tools and events.
The organization shall work towards facilitating academic, social, and professional relationships with Human Rights and Social Justice students as well as members of the Carleton community as a whole. CUHRS shall strive to carry out its objects without discrimination as between its Members, and in particular on the basis of race, religion, colour, national or ethnic origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, age, or political conviction. This Article shall not be interpreted to preclude any rule, program, or activity that has as its objects the amelioration of conditions that may hinder the full and equal participation of any group in CUHRS activities or the Human Rights Profession. CUHRS shall make all reasonable efforts to schedule events, elections, and meetings so as to not hinder participation by any religious, cultural, social, or other group to which Members belong.
